Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #7

What did you learn this week in the lab?

  • This week in lab we continued our studies on Genetic Materials. As well as reviewing our read and reflection from week #6. We completed two different activities, the first being when we constructed our own model of DNA using candy gumdrops. Our second activity was a baby lab where we flipped coins and based on whether they landed on heads or tails determined the features of the baby. We also had the opportunity to observe the butterflies, that grew from the caterpillars we observed last week. It was fun and interesting to see their growth!

Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing?

  • I found this entire lesson to be fun and engaging with clear and concise directions throughout.

How can you apply what you have learned to your teaching in the future?

  • I thought the gumdrop candy DNA strand activity would be a great activity to implement in my future classroom. The lesson was informative and helped me better understand DNA strands. As well as the baby face activity when you flip a coin to determine the facial features of the baby. Both activities are very applicable to implement in the classroom.
