Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #5

What did you learn this week in the lab?

  • This week in lab we started a new unit about ecology. Specifically, we studied different habitats, ecosystems, and biomes. We studied the similarities and difference between ecosystems and biomes. Lastly, we learned about food chains and were assigned a biome and made a food chain that fit with the specific biome (see below). I also provided a picture of my seed germination, and It has grown a lot since last week!

Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing?

  • Overall, I found the entire lab section to be clear without any confusion. The information given during the lecture portion of lab as well as the activities gave details and were easy for myself to understand. 

How can you apply what you have learned to your teaching in the future?

  •  The activity where we studied the big ideas of different habitats would be a great activity to bring into an elementary science lesson. My group studied Bubble Net Fishing where whales work together to catch their prey which are fish. As well as creating a food map for the Tundra region helped my understanding of food maps and the Tundra biome in general. Both activities would be great applications to my future classroom.

    The way your food web had to change due to the disaster you must have been given! It is crazy how things can change by one simple event. Great job, Claire!

    Hey Claire! I loved your demonstration of the food chain in the Tundra. It is extremely clear on the consumer levels as well as giving additional information about the habitat was very insightful. Your fast plant also seems to be growing very well! Nice job!

  Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #10 What did you learn this week in the lab? This week in lab we focused on the big ideas of natural selection and evolution. Explored more of the NGSS standards in Life Science knowing this our last week studying this topic. Lastly, we completed two activities with a natural selection simulation and preying on beans. Both of these activities helped us better understand the content we were taught.  Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing? I found everything from the lab this week to be clear and concise with minimal confusion for myself.  How can you apply what you have learned to your teaching in the future?  The bean activity I think would be a great activity in the classroom. However, you would need to manipulate some of the steps for elementary students because they might not know how to calculate percentages.    Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #3 What did you learn this week in the lab?   This week in lab we learned about the process of germination. Germination is the process by which a seed grows from a seed to a seedling. We also discussed what variables make something living or non-living, also known as active or dormant. From this information, we were able to apply it to the different activities we did in class.  Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing? When we first began the germination activity, I was a little confused on the directions of the activity. I wasn't sure if the seeds were supposed to go on top of the cotton balls or bellow them. I also wasn't sure on how much water to put in my cup. After asking for further direction I was able to get my questions answered.  How can you apply what you have learned to your teaching in the future? Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #11

  Elementary Science Methods 1: Week #11 What did you learn this week in the lab? This week in the lab we engaged in many different experiments. These experimental activities included Coke float, baking soda + vinegar, M&M in water, plunger push, melting ice, and cold can. We used prediction and observation to conclude what was happening in each reaction. I really enjoyed doing these activities and using my five senses to figure out what was happening! Which parts did you find clear and which were confusing? I didn't find anything confusing in this lab, all directions were clear and concise! How can you apply what you have learned to your teaching in the future? The activity we did at each of the stations today was super engaging, and something I will strive to use in my future classroom. Not only do students observe the reactions, but students get to analyze and become curious which I think is important for students to engage in.
